Teacher’s Perspective: Why It’s Essential to Show Students the Value of Their Knowledge
February 7, 2024
Maria Berndtsson, who has been awarded the Pedagogical Prize in Örebro, is a teacher at Affärsgymnasiet in Örebro. She believes it is important to show students how they will benefit from the knowledge they gain in school.
Why did you become a teacher?
– Because I am passionate about my subjects and sharing that knowledge. Since becoming a trade teacher, I have also been passionate about preparing students as much as possible for the working life ahead.
What’s the best thing about teaching at Affärsgymnasiet?
– That there is such a positive attitude toward students across the entire school.
What can students expect from their teachers?
– Dedication, drive, and a positive view of students.
What do teachers expect from their students?
– That students dare to be open and honest about their preferences regarding assignments, teaching methods, and so on, so that we teachers can create the absolute best learning environment and conditions for their success.
How do you motivate your students?
– For me, building relationships is key. I work closely with my students and stay flexible to their thoughts and feelings about different tasks. I also think it’s important for motivation to show students why we are doing a certain task and how they will use that knowledge in their future careers. I aim to make every assignment meaningful and, as my personal goal this school year, to adopt a practical approach, even in more theoretical parts of the curriculum, especially for the Sales and Service Program (försäljnings- och serviceprogrammet). This way, students feel they are in a vocational program.
How does it feel to see a student grow and develop?
– It’s an amazing feeling and the most rewarding confirmation of a teacher’s work!
