Teacher’s Perspective: “APL is a Unique Opportunity”
April 8, 2024
Strong connections between school education and the workforce are crucial for preparing students for the future, according to Torbjörn Nyman, a teacher at Yrkesgymnasiet Skarpnäck. He describes the opportunity for workplace-based learning (APL) as unique and essential. We spoke with Torbjörn about the importance of industry-specific skills.
Helping young people discover and realize their full potential was what drew vocational teacher Torbjörn Nyman to the teaching profession. At Yrkesgymnasiet, he finds the unique opportunity to combine theoretical education with practical work. He describes workplace-based learning (APL) as crucial for students to apply their theoretical knowledge in practice.
“By placing students directly into the work environment, they get to experience the real challenges of the industry. This provides them with a concrete understanding of the profession and sets them up for successful careers.”
The APL period also offers students the chance to build industry networks, making it a valuable component of their education.
“It’s an opportunity for students to deepen their knowledge, which makes them more attractive in the job market.”
To prepare students, Torbjörn believes it’s important that the education stays aligned with the latest trends and requirements in each industry. He also emphasizes the need for support both before and during the APL period.
“I want to ensure a positive and rewarding experience for my students. It’s important that they feel secure and have someone to turn to. This way, they can maximize their learning.”
The effort is worth it; Torbjörn describes seeing a student develop as one of the most satisfying aspects of the teaching profession.
“Seeing a student progress gives me an enormous sense of pride and joy. Every advancement, no matter how small, reminds me why I am a teacher.”
