Students Provide Haircuts at Nursing Home: “Walking on Clouds”

Hands-on learning in a profession that brightens people's day. Yrkesgymnasiet school’s recurring project of giving haircuts to residents at the Täby nursing home is the ultimate win-win situation.

Practical learning is at the heart of Yrkesgymnasiet school’s (vocational upper secondary school) approach. Students spend more than half of their school time as apprentices in real working environments, gaining knowledge by practicing their trade.

At the same time, the school aims to be a positive force in the community.
Yrkesgymnasiet’s various campuses run local projects to benefit others. For the Handicrafts Programme at Yrkesgymnasiet Täby, this means visiting the local nursing home every seven weeks to cut and style the residents’ hair.

During one of these visits, the newspaper Mitt i was on hand to highlight the initiative. One of the residents who enjoyed a fresh look that day was Ingrid “Ia” Kvarforth.

“I feel like I’m walking on clouds when I’m done,” she told the newspaper.

The temporary hair salon is appreciated by both students and residents. Clarie Max, the activities coordinator at the nursing home, told Mitt i that it has led to many meaningful intergenerational connections. Student Hanna Longthong agrees.

“It’s fun to be here because many really appreciate it. Plus, it’s great practice for us,” she said.
