Oskar Thrives Through the Apprenticeship Concept
February 24, 2024
Oskar Hennström is in his second year of the Electrical and Energy Program at Yrkesgymnasiet in Västerås. “He was unmotivated about school before high school, but now he’s become our 'brand ambassador.' He’s very active in the school’s marketing team, has excellent grades, and excels in his field with high praise during his apprenticeship,” says Frida Beijbom, the principal.
What were your expectations of the electrical program, and has it turned out as you hoped?
“My expectations were that I would have fun but struggle with electrical theory. However, our teacher Andreas explains everything so that everyone understands and can keep up. There isn’t a day that goes by without learning something new and having a good laugh,” says Oskar.
What did you think of school before high school?
“I found it very boring and had no desire to go at all.”
Do you find it easier to reach your course goals through the apprenticeship model?
“Yes, it’s easy to understand and easy to achieve.”
Why did you choose Yrkesgymnasiet and the apprenticeship model instead of a traditional school-based education?
“I chose Yrkesgymnasiet because they focus mainly on learning by doing rather than taking tests multiple times a month, which suits me perfectly.”
Do you think it feels better to go to school now in high school compared to when you were in middle school?
“Much better. It’s also noticeable that my classmates are as passionate about electrical work as I am, and the lesson structure is such that it doesn’t stress you out.”
