At Yrkesgymnasiet Huddinge, students engage in extensive APL, or workplace internships. This allows them to become skilled in their professions and gain early exposure to working life. The school also boasts a 100% graduation rate. – “They learn what it’s like to work in a professional environment. This, combined with academic subjects, makes them very competent,” says Principal Erik Nilsson.
Apprentice students at Yrkesgymnasiet are leading the nation in goal achievement for vocational high school education. Moreover, 9 out of 10 graduates secure employment shortly after graduation. This article is part of a series highlighting the successes of schools and the efforts behind them.
Extensive APL and a 100% Graduation Rate
The students at Yrkesgymnasiet benefit from substantial APL, which prepares them well for their careers. The school has maintained a 100% graduation rate for a long time.
– “We focus heavily on lesson planning. Knowledge should be practiced during lessons – similar to a driving lesson. There has been a tradition in Swedish schools of assigning tasks to be submitted later, but we removed that a while ago. Instead, each lesson should have a task that is teacher-led. It should be concrete, time-efficient, and involve plenty of reviews,” says Erik Nilsson, adding:
– “We don’t just throw out a task to be submitted at the end. We provide support through presence and engagement, such as helping students find information or answering questions if something is difficult. I always say that teaching should make you eager, and you should move around a lot.”
Yrkesgymnasiet Huddinge has 230 students, all of whom spend a significant amount of time on APL, preparing them for professional life.
Dedicated APL Coordination
The school employs a full-time APL coordinator who manages and frequently visits the students at their internship placements.
– “Professional handling is essential. We also ensure the quality of the APL placements and verify that the mentors are suitable. They must be engaged and enjoy hosting a student, not just doing it for extra money. Teachers visit and approve the APL placements, checking that the work environment is safe and addressing any issues before the student arrives. Frequent visits are key,” says Erik Nilsson.
Motivating Students in Common Subjects
Currently, the school is working on finding ways to motivate students in the core subjects.
Why Choose Yrkesgymnasiet Huddinge?
– “We have long been highly regarded for safety. We always have staff present among the students during breaks and in the corridors. In short, it’s a safe school with great teachers and excellent APL placements.”
